When I started reading their course using Scheme, and I saw the way it worked, it was like I had come to the top of a mountainous pass and suddenly saw the blue-green vista of endless, verdant fields stretching away before me. That is a feeling I have not had in the last 10 years with regards programming and it is a crying shame that forthcoming MIT first-years will not have the same degree of understanding.
I think one of C’s biggest attractions for a long time has been that most of its costs are a conscious decision. If you favor startup time, or a small memory footprint, or fast execution, you can pretty much decide. This makes it as appropriate for embedded apps, as it is for running an HTTP server, as it is for building operating systems and compilers. With Java, despite all the things you get for “free”, it comes at the cost of other freedoms.
